Fonts I am loving right now: January

Curated from some of my favorite type foundries, I am sharing a round up of my favorite fonts this month.

Kaftan

Why I like it

Feminine. Frilly but yet beautiful. This display face has a lot of waves. In general, this year, I think we'll continue to see a lot of waves in fonts from this subtle, classy, and carefully crafted approach all the way to funky, almost illegible liquid Y2K lettering. Kaftan can be used in a lot of use cases in terms of brands—for application, this font is best for headlines. This font has a free trial which is great for portfolio ad students, like my friends over at book180.

PP Fragment

Why I like it

PP Fragment is a powerful font family and a fun way to mix and match sans serif and serif fonts. You can switch out one word in a sentence to add emphasis in a catchy headline or really push the boundaries with switching out characters within words. The possibilities are endless here! I think variable fonts will continue to be popular this year giving designers a robust design system to work with.

Folly

Why I like it

Boxy, chunky, and experimental. This font goes hand in hand with brands that are owning anti-user friendly fonts right now in their branding—creating opportunities to add way more personality to the sometimes rudimentary and basic design systems.

Rader

Why I like it

Rader is a legible font with a modern tactile look to it. This font was inspired by German road sign design systems at the intersection between getting a message across to not wanting to sacrifice beauty. Fonts like these will carry their weight for a long time. You can't break a system that just works. Hyper systematic fonts like these will start to replace the usage of classic fonts like Helvetica. I think every designer can contest to not ever wanting to use Helvetica like ever again.
